Botox™
Botox™ is the trade name for botulinum toxin, a chemical produced by the botulinum bacterium. It is a protein derivative which temporarily blocks neurotransmitter signalling to muscles. Minute quantities are injected into muscles responsible for dynamic lines such as frown lines, resulting in relaxation, skin smoothing and a younger, but natural, appearance as fine lines and wrinkles are reduced/eliminated around the treatment areas.
Botox™ is also used to reduce excessive underarm sweating with results lasting for 9-12 months.
The main areas treated are the glabellar region (frown lines), crow’s feet/laughter lines and the forehead region.

How safe is Botox™?
Botox™ is considered to be very safe and has been widely used cosmetically for nearly 20 years. Its use is approved in the UK for the treatment of several medical conditions, including use in children. Cautions and contraindications will be identified during the initial consultation with no obligation to proceed.
How does it feel?
Treatment involves a small number of injections, using needles (equivalent to those used by diabetics to inject insulin). This is relatively painless and takes as little as 10 minutes. Most people are able to return to normal activities immediately afterwards. It can take up to 2 weeks to see the full results and the effects last typically between 3 and 6 months. I suggest having 3-4 treatments over the first 12 months, but there is no obligation to do this.
Are there any side effects?
You may experience slight discomfort at the time of injection, with a small risk of bruising at the injection side. Precautions will be taken to minimise this. There have been no reported long-term effects from using Botox™.
What else can I do?
- Use sunscreen daily
- Avoid smoking as this is linked to premature wrinkles
- Maintain a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fresh water
- Use moisturisers regularly
